How does Xtribe work

Here is our step by step tutorial that explains the use and the many functions of the App.

Registration

Fast and easy:

Username: your name on Xtribe
Password: for your security create a unique combination of letters and numbers and symbols.
Email: confirm your registration.

Home

This is the heart of the app where you'll be able to look for products and services using a handy map that pinpoints them with specific markers around your position; you can also use list mode that shows ads starting from the closest to you. Using simple parameters that you can select clicking on the top right button next to the search bar can filter searches.

Search filters

You'll be able to refine the usual textual search using filters. Lists of ads on Xtribe are generally ordered by distance, starting with the closest ad. Selecting "sort by date" you'll have the opportunity to see the ads sorted by their uploading date starting with the most recent and indicating, as suggested on the screen, the desired distance.

Selling and geolocation of ads

You want to create an ad? Click “Add Product” or “Add Service” and in just a few seconds your ad will be posted. Pro tip: details matter. When you create a new ad, Xtribe asks you where you want to locate it. You will have to choose between two options: FIXED POSITION or WITH ME (the ad will follow you anywhere you go).

Activities

Xtribe offers many activities and countless people you can get in touch with. In this section you will always be able to keep an eye on all your activities once you “interacted” with an ad (using the chat, or offering to purchase, rent, barter...). The negotiations that require your attention are stored under the label "To Read" and they are always the first on the list so you won’t miss any of your conversations.

When will the activities be deleted? When a deal is done and both users have released a feedback, activities will be automatically removed and stored under "negotiations" inside the App side menu.

 Profile

Your profile represents your business card. A detailed and precise description increases your chances of being contacted. From this section you can access your data, edit your profile, and update your status.

In the profile section, you can also find a practical check-in feature integrated with Foursquare, for a more precise and detailed position: in this way you'll be able to show your exact position just touching the screen and choosing from a list of all possible nearby locations. We decided to integrate this feature to make it easier for your customer to find you, to make appointments, to encourage contact between users in the same area and to highlight clearly the location of your business.
Example: if you are inside a large shopping center, you can use Foursquare to reveal the specific café or store in which you can be reached.

Ad description

After choosing a product or service you're interested in, you can view all the information you'll need to proceed with the deal: detailed description, price, possibility to rent or barter the product or service, distance from your location, pictures, number of views, and number of potential buyers who are interested in the same product.

You can also add the product/service to your bookmarks and see the name and a detailed description of the seller.

CHAT WITH THE SELLER: in this area you'll be able to communicate directly with the seller in real time and start negotiating, accept a barter, agree on the price and possibly on the place where to meet and finalize the purchase of the chosen product or service.

MAKE YOUR OFFER: in this section you will have the opportunity to bid for the price displayed on the ad. The price you see is the one asked by the seller; will you be able to make a better deal?

ASK FOR RENT: If you want to use a product just for a limited period of time, ask to rent it. Select the period of the rental and suggest the appropriate price for that period of time.

BARTER OFFER: using Xtribe you won't have only the possibility to buy or sell something, but also to barter. By following the suggested procedure, you'll be able to select the item among your ads that you wish to barter with another user.

Section: Sell

Select ad location

FIXED POSITION: our application will help you pinpoint the specific location on the map where you want to place your ad. For example you can select the address of your store, or the spot where you will want to meet with your potential customers.

POSITION WITH ME (not available for Xtribe Store users): If you're creating an ad for a consulting service, for example, you'll be glad to know that, by using this option, your ad follows you wherever you go letting other Xtribers know when you’re nearby; want to sell an item that you always carry with you? Then do not select a specific address, but use the “Position With Me” feature and your ad will be on the move with you, anywhere you go.

BARTER: If you are interested in a swap, you can select the barter option for your ad. Using this option, your counterpart will be able to choose between offering cash or bartering a product or service directly from his/hers own listings.

RENT: If you are interested in renting a product or service you can easily use this option and negotiate using the chat.

How to sell effectively on Xtribe and make more money

1. Great photos and descriptions

If you rush through the body of the post or don’t include a good picture, you’re going to pay for it later. You can avoid receiving annoying follow-up questions by including all necessary details, such as the product name, size, price and condition, not to mention that good pictures sell better (see our tips on how to take good pictures of the item you are trying to sell).

2. Be honest about the condition

If the item you’re selling works great, let the buyer know in the post. And if you’re selling electronics, take a picture of the item while they’re turned on to prove that it works like you say it does.

3. Price your items correctly

You can expect to receive offers if you price your items slightly cheaper than eBay, because that’s what people are probably comparing your listing to anyway. You can also write ‘serious offers only’ to reduce the number of low offers.

4. Text, text and text!

Use Xtribe’s internal chat as much as possible. When a negotiation is written there are no arguments later on at the time of closing.

5. Take a photo of the serial number where possible

This is about protecting yourself from being ripped off. Let’s say you sell someone a game system, but they call you back and tell you it doesn’t work. If you have a copy of the serial number, you can make sure their story checks out.

6. In a moving sale, bundle similar items in the same listing

Creating separate Xtribe posts for every item isn’t just time consuming, it can affect your bottom line. So, if you’re holding a moving sale, include descriptions and pictures of multiple items in the posting to attract the most potential buyers. Spend time creating an informative headline, avoiding the use of ALL CAPS.

7. Don’t fall for scams

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. According to Xtribe, if you deal locally and meet people face-to-face, you will avoid 99% of scam attempts. Here are some other key reminders:

  • Do not extend payment to anyone you have not met in person.
  • Never wire funds (e.g. Western Union).
  • Don’t accept cashier/certified checks or money orders.
  • Never give out financial info.
  • Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen.

8. Work out the details before meeting

Before you meet anyone from Xtribe, use the chat to clarify the price of the item — plus where and when you’ll meet. If you get this information in writing, there’s a better chance of a successful sale.

9. Meet in a safe place

Instead of arranging for a meeting at your home or in an isolated area, conduct Xtribe business in a public setting, like at a coffee shop, mall etc.

10. Carry items with you at all times

This might not be for everyone, but if you are trying to sell small items carry them with yourself (at the gym, at work, in the subway etc.). With the “position with me” feature turned on, every Xtriber around you will be able to see your ad no matter where you are and potentially you will be able to sell your item right away. It seems like if you’re really serious about making money, you have to be available at a moment’s notice!

How to effectively sell used furniture

First of all, don’t throw away the furniture that you don’t want anymore! New York City’s streets are full of perfectly functioning (and good looking) discarded pieces of furniture that will be picked up by the waste trucks and destroyed. Instead, take a little time (1 or 2 hours tops) to restore that old dresser, coffee table, lamp or whatever other piece of furniture you want to get rid of. Most of the furniture that people want to throw out, is in good condition and with just a little cleaning and polishing they will look great again. There are tons of specialized products available at your local drugstore, grocery store etc. There are also products that can quickly fix scratches: look for them at your convenience store. With these small steps you’ll be able to sell used furniture faster and at a significantly higher price. We will keep updating out tips and tricks section with more interesting articles so, stay tuned…
